My name is Kaelyn and I am half Filipina and the other half is a mix of English, Irish, and Polish. Most people assume I’m Hispanic. On many occasions people will speak to me in Spanish assuming that I will understand. Lucky for them I took Spanish in high school, so I do understand some!
Growing up I remember that whenever I took standardized testing and they ask for your ethnicity I always marked off “other” because to me that was the best answer. That was back in the day when you could only chose one answer, rather than check all that may apply. You shouldn’t have to choose if you are one thing or another. I love being Hapa!
