I am so glad I found this website, it makes me feel empowered!
When I was a young child my classmates teased me for having “chink eyes.” I would get so upset and just cry to my mother.
Even for a time I took up dying my hair blonde ( I still do) JUST to make others happy. Now I just do it because I think its cute!
When people ask me what I am and they hear Japanese and Vietnamese MOST of the reactions I get are “Do you like anime?” or ” Do you give manicures?” I have figured out just to laugh it off.
After going through some soul searching I am proud to say I am a Hapa! :D
I’m half Viet! What are each of your parents ethnicities? For me i’ve always been the opposite,my hair was always lighter so i was dying it darker to look more Asian. I’m too tanned to dye my hair lighter! haha
I know what you mean about the hair dying – I used to do that too and I never consciously thought that I was trying to make myself look more acceptable to dominant society until one of my friends called me on it. After he passed away I decided to try going back to my natural color and it has brought up a lot of feelings for me but I am also kind of enjoying it. I do other people’s hair so I still have an outlet for all my hair dye thankfully!
